Every tattoo artist knows that it’s not enough to perform a perfect tattoo; it’s also essential to take good care of it. Proper aftercare is arguably the most important aspect of getting a tattoo. Tattoo aftercare requires products such as Vaseline for skin, creams, lotions, sunscreens, butter and others.
First of all, proper aftercare for a new tattoo ensures that it looks better, brighter, and promotes healthier skin around it. Accordingly, not taking proper care of the tattoo puts the client’s health at risk. Luckily, just a few products – moisturising creams and lotions – are sufficient for maintenance. By moisturising the skin properly, the overall healing process will be smooth and you won’t even notice how the tattoo has healed. Look, we have prepared a guide to help you purchase the right products.
Natural ingredients
- When choosing products for tattoo aftercare, pay careful attention to whether they are natural or contain any of these natural ingredients:
- Coconut oil, which has anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, and moisturising properties;
- Shea butter, that is known for its antioxidant properties;
- Rice bran oil, which promotes skin elasticity and has anti-aging properties;
- Almond oil, that reduces scars and UV damage, destroys stretch marks;
- Sea buckthorn oil, which promotes skin elasticity;
- Aloe vera, with anti-inflammatory properties that help speed up wound healing, slows down ageing processes, moisturises, and has a cooling effect.
Designed for tattoo care
It is very important that the moisturiser you choose for your treatment is specifically designed for tattoo care. The reason is simple: while one cosmetic will be an adequate moisturiser for human skin, it may lack other properties needed to heal a tattoo. However, carefully analyse the composition of the products – just because it is intended for tattoo care, does not mean that it is suitable for use. Therefore, before purchasing selected products, make sure that there are no allergens such as strong perfumes among the ingredients.
Each product has its own function
Butter or cream is a must-have product, which moisturises the skin before, during and after the tattoo session. Approximately 3-4 days before the session, moisturise the skin 2-3 times a day with butter and/or cream after ensuring you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.
The protective film protects the tattoo for the first 3-4 days allowing you to feel safe and enjoy an active lifestyle as it protects the tattoo from bacteria. Do not forget to remind the client that the film applied after the tattoo session should be removed after 24 hours. Also, don’t reapply it and let the tattoo breathe and heal.
Soaps and foams not only clean the tattoo safely, but also soothe possible itching. Make sure the product you use is antibacterial to prevent infections, and remember not to clean the tattoo with a cloth, as this can damage the tattoo by accidentally removing scabs.
The balm speeds the healing process and keeps the tattoo moist, while the lotion ensures bright and long-lasting tattoos. The majority of these products contain essential soothing ingredients, such as calendula oil, which not only moisturises, but also soothes the wound.
Vaseline: usually tattoo artists apply it immediately after the tattoo is done, as a thick layer of Vaseline protects the wound from dirt for at least a couple of hours. However, it is important to note that petroleum jelly should not be applied before starting a tattoo session because the skin can become too slippery and greasy, which means that the needles can slip and injure the client. Also, Vaseline is not recommended as a care product during the subsequent healing process of the tattoo, as it can prevent the wound from breathing and healing freely.
FAQ
Why is the tattoo skin care routine so important?
Caring for a skin in a tattooed area is very important for ensuring proper healing, preventing discomfort and scarring, and maintaining the quality of the tattoo.
How do I apply the cream after tattooing?
A thin layer of cream should be applied to a clean and dry tattooed area. There is no need to wrap the tattoo – simply apply the cream during the initial stage of healing, especially if the skin feels excessively dry or tense.
How long does the tattoo maintenance process usually take?
The duration of tattoo care varies, but it usually takes 2-4 weeks for complete healing. Consistent long-term care, including sun protection, will help maintain the quality of the tattoo and prevent fading.
