Starting a career in permanent makeup can be both exciting and overwhelming. There is a lot to learn, from choosing the right PMU machine and cartridges to understanding pigments, hygiene, skin preparation, and correct technique.
The good news is that you do not need every product on the market to begin. What matters most is investing in reliable equipment, professional training, and a carefully selected set of essentials that will allow you to work safely and confidently.
Choose a Reliable PMU Machine
Your machine is one of the most important tools in your kit.
A beginner-friendly PMU machine should be lightweight, comfortable to hold and easy to control. Consistent needle movement is especially important while you are still developing your technique. You do not necessarily need the most expensive machine available. A reliable professional model that feels comfortable in your hand is often a much better starting point.
PMU Cartridges
Different cartridges create different effects, so understanding needle configurations is an essential part of PMU training.
Some of the most commonly used configurations include:
1RL – Round Liner. A single needle configuration commonly used for precise work, fine details and certain hairstroke or lip techniques.
3RL – Round Liner. Three needles grouped together. It can provide slightly faster pigment implantation while still offering good control.
PMU Pigments - EYEBROWS
For eyebrow procedures, a small but versatile colour range is usually enough in the beginning. Consider choosing:
- a light brown;
- a medium brown;
- a dark brown;
- a warm modifier.
This allows you to mix shades according to the client's natural hair colour, skin tone and undertone.
PMU Pigments - LIPS
For lip procedures, a small but versatile colour range is usually enough in the beginning. Consider choosing:
- a nude shade;
- a soft pink;
- a warm coral or peach;
- a deeper red or berry shade;
- a warm corrector or neutralizer.
This allows you to customize shades according to the client’s natural lip colour, skin tone, undertone, and desired result.
