The tidiness of a tattoo studio must be at the same level as any hospital room as the process of tattooing demands a workspace to be as hygienic as possible. Essentially, in the process of making a tattoo, the artist creates an open wound, which can be contaminated if the workspace doesn’t meet the requirements. The use of gloves is one of the main ways to protect the client and the artist from any bacteria. You can find a variety of gloves, including some of the most popular ones – black nitrile gloves – in our shop.

To avoid infection and inflammation, make sure to use gloves that will prevent any unwanted bacteria or other particles from coming into contact with the client’s skin, even when touched by a tattoo artist. So how do you choose the most fitting gloves?

Latex, vinyl or nitrile?

Latex gloves are used in various medical procedures. Although they are quite thin and inexpensive, they are reasonably tough and resistant to puncture and other kinds of damage, however, it is important to note that allergies to latex can appear if worn for too long.

While vinyl gloves are thicker and safer than latex gloves, they can be quite exhausting and restrictive for the artist, as the material is heavier and thicker, therefore they are rarely worn during tattoo sessions. When it comes to using chemicals and sterilization of the studio, vinyl gloves are used more often.

Most suitable gloves for tattoo artists are ones made from nitril. Although they are thin, they are 3-5 times more resistant to needle punctures than latex gloves. Not only are they more durable and safer, but nitrile gloves don’t restrict artist hand movements. These gloves are favored by tattoo artists for their capability to withstand longer tattooing sessions and ensuring neither the client nor the artist suffers any allergic reaction.

The criteria for choosing the right gloves:

- thin gloves should not restrict the tattooist’s movements while still being resistant to damage;

- make sure that gloves are made from a non-allergenic material, such as latex gloves;

- gloves must be new and disposable;

- gloves should be puncture-resistant;

- gloves should fit well and be comfortable;

Tattoo artist also should choose gloves that fit his hand and fingers properly, so tapping or tying them with string wouldn’t be necessary. If particular gloves interfere with the workflow, artists should look for alternatives.

FAQ

Why do tattoo artists wear gloves?

In order to maintain hygiene and safety throughout the process of making the tattoo, artists wear gloves, preventing transmission of bacteria and reducing the risk of contact with other body fluids. Gloves ensure a sterile environment as well as clients’ comfort.

What types of gloves are most often used by tattoo artists?

More preferred choice for most tattoo artists are disposable nitrile gloves, less often they use gloves out of latex or vinyl. Latex gloves fit artists’ hands well, however they tend to cause allergies, while nitrile gloves are latex-free and are very resistant to punctures. Vinyl gloves might restrict artists movements and are less resistant to punctures.

How should a tattooist choose the right size gloves?

Tattoo artists should refer to the glove manufacturer’s size chart when selecting gloves, as they should fit their hand well, without restricting their movements. Measuring your hand first should help choose the right size.

What are double gloves and when are they recommended?

Double gloves are simply two layers of gloves that will ensure additional safety. They are recommended to use when working longer sessions or when allergic to latex.
