A tattoo machine is not enough. We know for a fact that choosing the most precise power supply is crucial for every tattoo artist, as it directly determines the performance and accuracy of the tattoo machine. That’s why in our shop you will find only accurately selected and highest-quality power supplies.

The results of tattoo artists’ work depend not only on their skills but also on their equipment. The appropriate tattoo machine is not enough for professionals. They also need a quality power supply for one or more machines. It can be selected only by finding out more about the characteristics of different power supplies.

The required voltage

Each power supply varies in voltage, with some operating from 3 to 12 or even 15 volts. Another type of power supply is a portable power supply. They can operate from 1,5 to 20 volts depending on size. You need to choose the right voltage based on both the needed power and the type of machine:

1. Inductive tattoo machine: Traditional induction machines normally operate at 8-10 volts.

2. Rotary tattoo machine: Rotary machines are known for their versatility. They often have a wider voltage range than induction machines. Typically operate at voltages of 5-15 or more.

3. Pen tattoo machine: These machines normally operate in the 6-9 volt range.

Analogue (traditional) or digital?

Two main power supply types are commonly used: analogue (traditional) and digital. Although a digital power supply is more commonly encountered, this does not mean that you have to choose exactly this one. You need to compare the advantages and disadvantages of both types and at the same time weigh up your own needs and working conditions before choosing the right power supply.

Analogue (traditional) power supplies:

+ Simplicity. Analogue power supplies are simple, with basic control functions.

+ Durability. Highly durable: designed to withstand heavy loads.

+ Affordability. Analogue power supplies are often more economical than digital ones.

 - Limited functions. Analogue power supplies can have fewer functions and settings than digital ones. Besides, you will have to stand next to the supply until you can understand how this supply measures voltage.

 - Lower accuracy. It could be easier to measure the precise voltage in digital power supplies.

Digital power supplies:

+ Precision. Digital power supplies allow precise voltage adjustment and at the same time you can monitor and change the settings: all this even while tattooing the client. If the machine starts to work strangely you will know if the power supply is the problem.

+ Memory settings. Some digital supply models allow you to save and restore voltage settings, which can be useful when working with different tattooing techniques.

+ Security functions. The majority of digital power supplies have safety features such as overload protection and automatic shutdown.

+ Power. Essentially, digital power supplies are more powerful. They can operate at voltages higher than 18 volts if needed.

 - Complexity. Digital power supplies come in different shapes and sizes, but they all have displays. This means that they often have more complex menus and settings. It could take some time to learn.

 - Price. Digital supplies are more expensive than analogue ones.

Match the power supply to your existing machine

It is a must to consider your already existing tattoo machine when choosing the power supply because some power supplies can be used only with inductive tattoo machines, others are compatible only with rotary machines, and others with both. Also, you have to know in what range your machine works best. If you have many different machines, it is best to choose a digital power supply – they are usually suitable for several types of machines.

You should consider how many tattoo machines you want to connect to the power supply. Many tattoo artists want to have separate tattoo machines for different jobs. Let’s say, one machine will be dedicated for lines, and another for shading. In this case, it is convenient to have a power supply that allows you to connect two machines at the same time, making the tattooing session smoother and more effective.

Size and weight

Consider the size, weight and possibility of moving the power supply. A smaller power supply does not necessarily mean you will have to opt out of the power. Many brands offer more compact but powerful devices for those who travel frequently or simply don’t want to put too much strain on their studio.

FAQ

How does a power supply work?

The power supply works as the intermediary between the machine and the power source. It converts the electricity from the socket into a regulated voltage that powers the machine. By adjusting the voltage, tattoo artists can control the speed and power of the machine.

Do power supplies come in different types?

Yes. Different types of power supply units meet different preferences and needs. These can be digital supplies with precise displays, traditional supplies with manual voltage adjustment, or portable options for tattoo artists on the move.

What should I consider when choosing a power supply?

When choosing a power supply, consider such factors as voltage range, compatibility with the machine, safety features, preferred interface (digital or analogue), durability and mobility.

How do I maintain and clean a power supply?

Switch off the power supply when not in use, inspect it regularly for damage, clean the exterior with a damp cloth, ensure proper ventilation to prevent overheating, adjust the voltage carefully, and consult a professional technician for repairs or maintenance if necessary.
